Abstract

Due to the rapid increase in the elderly population and growing interest in quality of life, needs for evaluating taste functions
are increasing in dental clinics. However, there are various causes for taste disorders, and methods of assessment have not been standardized fully, which make it challenging to evaluate taste disorders comprehensively. Therefore, the aim of this article is to propose practice guideline on the diagnosis of taste disorders and to lay the groundwork for the development of more efficient diagnostic methods. Essential procedures including history taking, clinical examinations, laboratory tools, and several gustatory function tests are introduced. In conclusion, standardization of evaluating taste disorders is essential, and more progress is needed for the development of assessment methods with more reliability and validity.
